More Derby Adventures

It's hard to believe, but Derby pup will be 6 months old next week. Again, what happened to my "puppy"...he's looking so grown up these days!

We've had a busy, busy week. Last Saturday he joined me at the Celebration of Pets in Sarasota - it was a huge event and he met hundreds of new friends. It was also a very long day (10+ hours) and he was *such* a good puppy. Here's a picture of him manning my booth.

He has since demanded a big raise and a new title (Public Relations Manager, of course). :)

Yesterday we made a 3 hour trip north for a Dalmatian "fun day" and Derby got to give coaching a try. So fun! He took to it right away...very cool to see that instinct kick in.

And here's a little video...

Good boy Derb! As much as I love agility training, and training in general, nothing beats seeing a Dal doing what they were bred to do. I'd love to start some road trial training with him once he grows up and matures a bit. Of course, I'd also love to have a horse again. Derby too...he especially enjoyed their "cookies". :)

Agility Dals

I was recently asked if I had any advice for someone who is interested in getting a Dalmatian someday and would like to give agility a try. I'm a little late on my reply (sorry!), but I thought I'd share my thoughts.

It probably goes without saying that I think Dalmatians, in general, are great candidates for agility. They are very athletic dogs known for their (sometimes endless amounts of) energy and endurance. As many dogs do, they certainly benefit from having a job and a positive outlet for all that spotty enthusiasm! I've only worked with a few agility Dals personally, but have watched a number of others over the years and am happy to share my observations.

When it comes to picking a dog with a performance career in mind, it's my honest option that temperament is probably one of the most important considerations, along with structure. As much as I love Peyton, and wouldn't trade him for anything (most days!), he has quite a bit of genetic baggage, as one of my trainers would say. When choosing the Derby pup, temperament was at the very top of my list. I honestly couldn't even tell you if there are any top performance dogs in his lines as that's just not something *I* really consider all that important.

While I do think there is a lot of value in selecting a pup from an experienced, reputable breeder who can help find a good match in terms of temperament, structure, and personality, there are certainly some great rescued Dals out there competing too! If I were looking for a performance candidate specifically, I would probably look for a dog (with those qualities) that's at least a year old, but that's just based on my personal experiences only. I love puppies, but they certainly can be unpredictable.

As far as training goes, while there really aren't any issues that are *unique* to Dalmatians, I have found that many Dals share similar challenges.

I thinks the breed, in general, can be deceptively soft. I say deceptively because I think the average observer sees their high energy and fun loving personalities and will often mistake training issues and signs of stress for stubbornness or even stupidity. I'm sure that most people who watch Peyton run in a trial have no idea that he's very capable of melting into a puddle of spots (so to speak) if he feels like he's done something wrong.

Not that their sensitive nature is a bad thing, but it's definitely something to keep in mind when training. Training has to be *fun* for both dog and handler, and I think building confidence is more important than doing everything perfectly. This can be a hard concept for a lot of handlers (myself included!) to grasp, especially when first starting out, but I think it pays off in the long run.

Dals are clowns and boy dals in particular can be especially silly and verrrrrry slow to mature. A sense of humor is a *requirement*, and I'm pretty sure my boys think their number one job is to keep me entertained. :) I have found that it's much easier to work with their instincts rather against them. Resources such a Control Unleashed (books and DVDs) are invaluable for those struggling with various control/reactivity/training issues.

Probably the best training advice I can give is to find a really good (positive!) trainer (or school) that you're comfortable working with. I've been fortunate to work with some really amazing trainers, but I've definitely met a few that made me want to run in the opposite direction...quickly!

Those are my off-the-top-of-my-head rambling thoughts! Now my Dal friends, it's *your* turn - have any advice to offer? Please leave a comment!

Since no post is complete without pictures, here are some of Peyton from a recent trial...love them ears!

In other news, we have a winner in our shampoo giveaway! Suzanne, please send me an e-mail (to agiliespots(at)aol.com) with your address.

Sunshine!

Everyone can use a little sunshine on a Monday, right? Here's a few cute pictures of Peyton soaking up some indoor rays when it was too chilly for real sunbathing...

Spot a Cure

My good spotty friend Lisa over at "The adventures of Tess & Jazz" has teamed up with a graphic artist and a printer to design and sell t-shirts to help raise money for breast cancer research and awareness! She's formed a non-profit called "Spot a Cure" in honor of some Dalmatian friends that have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.

As if that gesture in itself wasn't wonderful enough, the t-shirt designs that they have come up with are awesome!

The t-shirts are being sold for $15 each, and shipping is $5. ALL of the proceeds are going to "Spot a Cure" and I believe it's going to be about $10 a shirt - awesomeness!

Now I can see where if you're not a spotty-dog-fanatic, maybe the design isn't exactly up your alley, BUT I'm sure Lisa would be thrilled to accept any donations to help the cause. OR, I'd be happy to take the spotty shirt off your hands! :)

I know times are tough and there are always organizations in need, but what impresses me so much is when ordinary, everyday people take it upon themselves to help MAKE A DIFFERENCE. (And Lisa, you are far from ordinary, but hopefully you know what I mean.)

Inspired. That's what I am - I ordered my shirt, but I want to do more. And because I've been playing a contest on Facebook to hopefully win some agility DVDs, I thought it would be fun to have a little contest of my own. But in my contest, everybody wins. :)

So, what I would like to offer is for every person who becomes a "fan" of Simply Spotted Photography on Facebook in September, I will donate $1 (up to $100) to Spot a Cure. I currently have 94 fans so let's try for 194! Yes, it is a little self-serving (hey, I like fans!) but I'm hoping that this will be another way to help spread the word. And I promise not to clutter up your FB pages - actually, I'm not the best FB updater anyway. :)

Thank you to all who donate! And thank you to Lisa for being so darn inspiring! I understand that they've gotten a great response to the t-shirts so far and one of the designs is already sold out, but have no fear - more are on the way!

Hunter & Oreo

I met Hunter and Oreo, the two Dals available through Dalmatian Rescue of Tampa Bay, at the agility trial this weekend! Since their current foster mom competes with her spotty dogs in agility, she brought these two along so I could get some pictures.

These two are really great dogs! Even though I didn't get a chance to spend much time with them, they were both extremely friendly and seemed to handle the trial environment quite well. They definitely have a lot of energy, but I think with the right home, they will make great companions!

First is Hunter, who is around one year old. He is such a cutie and has the softest coat!

And here's Oreo - not sure if there's much Dalmatian there, but he does have spots! And those ears - love them! :)

Again, if you are looking to add a spotty dog to your family, please head over to the Dalmatian Rescue of Tampa Bay to learn more about these two, and other Dalmatians available for adoption.

Another Young Dal Available

As much as I would love to foster a Dal in need, I just don't have the space right now to do so. Well that, and I'm pretty sure the spotties would start their own "rescue us" campaign if I did! :)

Since I can't foster, I'm hoping that I can still help by posting some rescue spotty dogs here on occasion so if you're looking for a Dalmatian, please consider adopting one from the Dalmatian Rescue of Tampa Bay. Also, please note that I completely support responsible Dalmatian breeders - and there are many wonderful ones out there, but as we all (hopefully) know, there are also way too many "backyard" breeders and puppy mills so make sure you do your homework if you're looking for a Dalmatian puppy!

With that said, please meet Hunter, a one year old Dalmatian currently being fostered by DRTB. I've been told that this poor guy was turned into the shelter by his first family for escaping from their yard and was then returned a second time for "getting into stuff" when he was left in the kitchen.

Obviously Hunter will need a family that is experienced and know what to expect from a young Dalmatian. My spotty boys are snickering because they *know* how much fun the kitchen can be. And that's why I keep a gate up! As good as my guys are (most of the time), the kitchen is just way too tempting. :)

More Show Dals!

Just a few more spotty pics from the shows this past weekend - All of the photos are now posted in the proofing gallery on my website, www.simplyspottedphoto.com. If you are a Dal owner, and looking for the password, please e-mail me at kim@ simplyspottedphoto.com.

And here is one of the win photos from the specialty on Friday. To those who had photos taken, my apologies - I didn't anticipate that we would be taking these in the dark, so thank you for your patience! At least the Dals stand out...if they were a dark breed, I would have really been in trouble. :)

Seeing Spots!

I made another trip up to Ocala this weekend - this time it was to photograph the Mid-Florida Dalmatian Club's Specialty Show on Friday evening. It was fun...I saw a lot of gorgeous spotties, and got to meet some real nice Dal folk.

I just finished uploading a couple hundred photos, and have a few hundred more to go, but I'll share some of my early favorites. The third spotty down should look familiar... :)

On Saturday morning, I headed back over to the show grounds to take some more pictures at the all-breed show. This time I ran into a few familiar faces from SOTC - which is always nice! And this afternoon, I photographed one of the cutest terriers *ever* - hope to have some pictures of her up tomorrow.

It's been a busy weekend!

Meet Layla and Rescue!

Here are a few more of my favorites from yesterday's photo session with Layla and Rescue. Aren't they just adorable? Layla is 4 months old and Rescue is a year and a half. They were very good spotties, even though Layla didn't hold still for long - talk about some puppy energy! She's a sweet one though and I absolutely *love* her eyes.

I had fun taking pictures of these two! :)

Layla & Rescue

On the trip home from Ocala today I stopped to photograph two gorgeous young Dals and their family. I still have a ton of photos to go through, but here are a couple of my early favorites.

Meet Layla and Rescue - more pictures of these two coming soon!
